SUSTAINABLE USE OF PLANT RESOURCES TO COMBAT INFECTIOUS DISEASES (SUPRIDE)

2023

Period :

2023 - 2026

The SUPRIDE project, in collaboration with the University of Helsinki, aims to promote
the sustainable use of Beninese plant resources to combat infectious diseases
and AMR, while adding value to agricultural waste.

1. Context

In sub-Saharan Africa, traditional herbal medicine remains a key resource for
primary care, but its integration into modern systems is hampered by a
lack of standardization and scientific data. Antimicrobial resistance
(AMR) and infections such as those caused by Chlamydia trachomatis are
also major challenges. The potential of local medicinal plants is
underutilized due to a lack of in-depth research on their in vivo efficacy,
mechanisms of action, and chemical composition. Similarly, agricultural waste, such as
cotton residues, remains underutilized despite its antimicrobial properties.

2. Objectives

General Objective

The SUPRIDE project, in collaboration with the University of Helsinki, aims to promote
the sustainable use of Beninese plant resources to combat infectious diseases
and AMR, while valorizing agricultural waste. Funded by the
DEVELOP2 Program of the Academy of Finland, it combines the standardization of
plant extracts ,

in vivo studies, chemical characterization, ethnopharmacological research ,
and local capacity building for sustainable medicine
.

3. Résultats Essentiels

  • - Inventory of medicinal plants used and traditional practices for the treatment of sexually transmitted infections caused by C. trachomatis in Benin - Data on the efficacy of selected plants

4. Livrables

  • - Production of a traditionally improved drug for the treatment of sexually transmitted infections - Article currently being written
