2023

Period :

2023-2025

The project "Surveillance of
African swine fever in Benin: African Swine Fever Virus Outbreaks and Sampling in
Benin" aims to strengthen early detection, virus characterization, and the implementation
of appropriate prevention strategies.

1. Context

This is a collaborative project between URMAPha at the University of Abomey-Calavi and the
US Department of Agriculture, funded by CRDFGLOBAL. African swine fever
(ASF) poses a major threat to the pig industry in Africa,
causing considerable economic losses and compromising food security .
In Benin, several outbreaks have been reported in recent years,
highlighting the need for an effective surveillance system. The project "Surveillance of
African Swine Fever in Benin: African Swine Fever Virus Outbreaks and Sampling in
Benin" aims to strengthen early detection, virus characterization, and the implementation
of appropriate prevention strategies. This initiative contributes to the protection of
the national livestock population and the socio-economic stability of Beninese farmers.

2. Objectives

General Objective

The objective of the project is to identify cases of African swine fever in pig farms
in Benin.

Specific Objectives

  • - Establish an epidemiological surveillance system to detect and monitor outbreaks of African swine fever in Benin. - Identify, characterize, and map ASF virus strains to support national control and prevention strategies.

3. Résultats Essentiels

  • - Collection and analysis of blood samples - Drafting of the manuscript on the results of Whole Genome Sequencing - Signing of the Memorandum of Understanding for the integration of URMAPha, University of Abomey-Calavi, into the Global African Swine Fever Research Alliance.
