MULTIDRUG RESISTANT GONOCOCCAL INFECTIONS IN VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES : EPIDEMIOLOGY OF NEISSERIA GONORRHOEAE AMONG HOMOSEXUALS, SEX WORKERS AND DRUG USER COMMUNITIES IN BENIN-2019-2021

2019

Period :

2019 - 2021

The
project aims to fill this data gap in order to support epidemiological surveillance,
improve prevention strategies, and strengthen therapeutic management
at the national level.

1. Context

Gonorrhea, caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, is a growing public health problem,
particularly with the emergence of strains that are multi-resistant to
antibiotics. In Benin, data on the prevalence and resistance of this bacterium
remain limited, particularly among vulnerable populations such as
homosexuals, sex workers, and drug users. These high-risk groups
play a key role in the transmission and spread of resistance. This
project aims to fill this data gap in order to support epidemiological surveillance ,
improve prevention strategies, and strengthen therapeutic management
at the national level.

2. Objectives

General Objective

Assessing the transmission of sexually transmitted infections caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae between sex workers and homosexual men

Specific Objectives

  • - Determine the prevalence and epidemiological characteristics of Neisseria gonorrhoeae in vulnerable communities in Benin. - Identify antimicrobial resistance profiles and associated genes in isolated strains. - Assess behavioral and socioeconomic factors influencing the transmission and resistance of N. gonorrhoeae.

3. Résultats Essentiels

  • The prevalence and epidemiological and genetic characteristics of Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains responsible for sexually transmitted infections are known.

4. Livrables

  • Project implementation report.
