TOXICOLOGICAL AND ANTIDIABETIC ACTIVITIES OF MEDICINAL PLANTS INVOLVED IN THE ENDOGENOUS MANAGEMENT OF DIABETES MELLITUS: A HOLISTIC STUDY FOR THE PRODUCTION OF PHYTMEDICINES

2022

Period :

2022-2025

The three-year project aims to improve the endogenous management of diabetes
mellitus in ECOWAS countries (Benin, Cape Verde, Ghana, and Nigeria).

1. Context

The project entitled "Toxicological and antidiabetic activities of medicinal plants
involved in the endogenous management of diabetes mellitus: a holistic study for the
production of phytomedicines" has been awarded a $200,000 grant from ECOWAS
under the Research and Innovation Support Program. Launched
in January 2023, this three-year project aims to improve the endogenous management of diabetes
mellitus in ECOWAS countries (Benin, Cape Verde, Ghana, and Nigeria).

2. Objectives

General Objective

actives.

3. Résultats Essentiels

  • Halfway through, from January 2023 to August 2024, significant results were achieved: a systematic review identified 646 plants used for the treatment of diabetes, which were narrowed down to 10 key plants, providing a solid basis for future work. Efforts to collect and extract medicinal plants are underway to produce data on their toxicity and antidiabetic properties. In Benin, four Master's students have been selected and are undergoing training to become experts capable of developing innovative solutions based on the pharmacopoeia, with a similar effort being undertaken in other ECOWAS countries. A series of eight webinars on phytomedicine.
